Species Coexistence in Nitrifying Chemostats: A Model of Microbial Interactions
نویسندگان
چکیده
In a previous study, the two nitrifying functions (ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB) or nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB)) of a nitrification reactor—operated continuously over 525 days with varying inputs—were assigned using a mathematical modeling approach together with the monitoring of bacterial phylotypes. Based on these theoretical identifications, we develop here a chemostat model that does not explicitly include only the resources’ dynamics (different forms of soluble nitrogen) but also explicitly takes into account microbial interand intra-species interactions for the four dominant phylotypes detected in the chemostat. A comparison of the models obtained with and without interactions has shown that such interactions permit the coexistence of two competing ammonium-oxidizing bacteria and two competing nitrite-oxidizing bacteria in competition for ammonium and nitrite, respectively. These interactions are analyzed and discussed.

Modelling microbial competition in nitrifying biofilm reactors.
A large variety of microbial parameter values for nitrifying microorganisms has been reported in literature and was revised in this study. Part of the variety was attributed to the variety of analysis methods applied; it also reflects the large biodiversity in nitrifying systems. This diversity is mostly neglected in conventional nitrifying biofilm models. In this contribution, a one-dimensiona...

The human mucosal surface is colonized by the indigenous microflora, which normally maintains an ecological balance among different species. Certain environmental or biological factors, however, may trigger disruption of this balance, leading to microbial diseases. In this study, we used two oral bacterial species, Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus sanguinis (formerly S. sanguis), as a mod...

Unveiling the mechanisms that promote coexistence in biological communities is a fundamental problem in ecology. Stable coexistence of many species is commonly observed in natural communities. Most of these natural communities, however, are composed of species from multiple trophic and functional groups, while theory and experiments on coexistence have been focusing on functionally similar spec...
متن کاملEstimating the probability of coexistence in cross-feeding communities.
The dynamics of many microbial ecosystems are driven by cross-feeding interactions, in which metabolites excreted by some species are metabolised further by others. The population dynamics of such ecosystems are governed by frequency-dependent selection, which allows for stable coexistence of two or more species. We have analysed a model of cross-feeding based on the replicator equation, with t...

Chemostat models provide the foundation for much current research in bioengineering, ecology, and population biology [8]. In engineering, the chemostat is known as the continuous-stirred tank reactor. It is used to model the dynamics of interacting organisms in waste-water treatment plants, lakes and oceans, and in biomedical contexts. The basic mathematical model of the chemostat is a system o...
